How Congo rebellion impacts coffee growers

I'm very proud to be able to articulate other people's stories.

They might be happening thousands of miles away but it’s important we read them, understand them and appreciate the economic, social and coffee drinking impacts.

If you like coffee, this one’s for you.

A client I've written for before, approached me last month and asked if I would step in and articulate how their community of coffee farmers were being impacted by a hostile takeover in the Eastern DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo).

Once I'd interviewed the client to find out as much as I could about the present situation and how it was impacting their community of independent coffee farmers, I carried out my own desk research. Reading international reports on the conflict, background information on the M23 rebels, Rwanda and the Congolese government. As well as researching the geography of the region.

Before I was ready to write.

As I worked on my research it became clear which elements of the story needed telling and from which angle.

Having written for this client before I knew the written brand voice to adopt, so I could write it from their perspective.

Honestly, clearly and sensitively.

So the article truly represented the people most impacted by the insurgence.

Since January this year, over a million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes, towns and villages in the Eastern DRC, thousands have been killed and to this day, violence is an everyday occurrence in the region.

When my article was sent to the head of the Coffee Cooperative who is an internationally acclaimed human (women's) rights activist, she said...

"I just read the article which is very powerful and describes the situation that's really happening in my province. For me, it's only fair that everyone can read what's happening. It's very touching. Bravo!"
